The owners were located and surrendered him as they were not in a position to keep him safe.

What is the best thing about your placement so far?
I am not sure if I can point out one best thing – because the whole experience was just unique.
Working with the kids and seeing how interested they were in my projects was really very special for me.

Your biggest achievement so far?
Gaining the kids trust made me very proud honestly.

In your time there so far, has anything happened that has stood out, or touched your heart, or made you laugh?
Lots of things touched my heart… e.g. Athi who wanted especially me reading isiXhosa with him or Ernest who told me I was like a mother and a teacher in one person for him.
Of course our trip to Knysna Elephant Park is unforgettable. On the way to the Elephant Park the kids were dancing and singing in the bus – this made me laugh and it was touching to see how excited they were.

What experience do you feel you are gaining?
My time at the centre proved that if you show these kids that you believe in them, if you show them love and patience – anything is possible. They have a lot of potential and talents, they must just get the chance to show it.
It doesn’t need much to put a smile on these kids’ faces – they need love, care and support…like any kid.

Any other relevant comments?
@Sharon & Rustin: Thanks for your effort and hard work. It feels as if are there for your volunteers 24/7.
You made me feel welcome from the very first moment and I appreciated my time with you guys a lot!

Regarding your time at the centre: take your time and be patient to gain the kids trust. Listen to their stories and be sensitive to their needs or boundaries.
Be ready to prepare your own projects (art, music, education…) independently. You will be free and even encouraged to bring in your ideas.
The kids will appreciate your effort. Enjoy every moment with them – time flies and good times goes by even faster. #volunteer #youth #careerbreak #socialwork
Stevie Hoesel volunteered with youth at risk on ou Stevie Hoesel volunteered with youth at risk on our Youth Development and Social Work project in Knysna for nearly 12 weeks!

She was such an asset! Aside from the project complimenting her studies, she was intelligent and showed such huge compassion and caring with the youth many of whom have had such challenging circumstances at such early ages resulting in huge trust issues.

She established strong bonds with the youth and was always an understanding ear for them to open up too about what was bothering them. She took extra time to do individual reading with some of the youth that needed the extra help to try and catch up. We will miss her enthusiasm and laughter.

Stevie leaves for a new opportunity in New Zealand next week and we wish her all the best in her new adventure.

See you soon Stevie! No goodbyes as we know you will return to South Africa one day having immersed yourself into the local cultures and made so many good friends!

Some more feedback from volunteer Deborah Simon fr Some more feedback from volunteer Deborah Simon from the United States 🇺🇸 who took part in the Endangered Wildlife Monitoring and Conservation project in Zululand 🇿🇦 (https://volunteerinternationaladventures.com/endangered-wildlife-volunteer-project/)

Deborah has a lot of experience in conservation in other countries so it was truly wonderful to have her on the project enabling her to get an experience of the workings in South African conservation.

What is the best thing about your placement so far? Placed with an incredible group of dedicated volunteers and Wildlife Monitors. Felt honoured to share the experience with all of them. Experience was even better than I could have hoped for.

Your biggest achievement so far? Added 70 birds to my life list and would not have been possible without all the knowledgeable assistance of Wildlife Monitors.

In your time there so far, has anything happened that has stood out, or touched your heart, or made you laugh? Being able to see all these magnificent animals wild and free. Watching a mother wart hog back herself into her den and seeing her three babies squeezing past her to be protected by her tusks at the entrance to the den.

What experience do you feel you are gaining? Getting a close up understanding of the difficulties in protecting the animals on a Wildlife Reserve.

Any other relevant comments? It was wonderful to be a part of the inner workings of the Imfolozi Reserve.

Please write a short case study to help future volunteers:
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who has had a lifetime dream of visiting Africa. The incredible advice and coordination of the staff in assisting me in making my plans made this journey possible and extremely rewarding.

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day! Did Today is International Vulture Awareness Day!

Did you know that vultures actually prevent the spread of disease that could affect humans and other animals?

Their corrosive stomach acid lets them scavenge rotten animal corpses infected with all sorts of nasty things helping to dispose of these carcasses. Even carcasses infected with rabies or anthrax bacteria!

One of the aspects of this incredible wildlife conservation project is occasional vulture counts in protected wildlife reserves.

There are six Vulture species in South Africa that are listed as either Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered. In no order: White-Headed, Hooded, African White-Backed, Bearded, Lappet-faced and our personal favourite, the Cape Vulture.

The Lappet-faced vulture comes in as the largest in Africa with an incredible wingspan of up to 3 meters and they can weigh up to 14kgs!

The challenges they face are long…from poisoning, killed by hunters for traditional medicine, breeding colonies being disturbed, recreational rock-climbing, habitat loss and electrocution to name a few 😞

Volunteer with real conservation and wildlife efforts with endangered species in South Africa….you might just be lucky enough tho have your dates coincide with a vulture count: https://volunteerinternationaladventures.com/endangered-wildlife-volunteer-project/ #vulture #birdofprey #bird #volunteer #wildlife #conservation #gapyear #careerbreak
An unusual and exceptionally cute rescue….not a An unusual and exceptionally cute rescue….not a Vervet Monley but a Greater Galago aka Thick-tailed Bushbaby.
The reason they got the name ‘Bushbaby’ is because one of their vocalisations sounds like a human baby crying 👶🏽

These fascinating nocturnal creatures are from the Primate order from the Galagidae family in the Otolemur genus.

They are found in south, central and Eastern Africa and are known for building nests in the trees and live on a diet of tree gum, flowers, nectar, insects and other small animals.

Michaela’s last day on the Youth Development and Michaela’s last day on the Youth Development and Social Work and boy did she spoil she the youth with a pizza, cake, cooldrink, sweets and fruit! A real feast! 🍕 🍏

Michaela has been a stellar volunteer! Motivated, innovative, on the ball and such a huge heart. We will miss her lots but as a regular visitor to South Africa, we know she will come back to visit us and catch up! It’s not goodbye but until we see her again 🌟

We wish her all the best at her next problem in Cape Town and know she will be an absolute asset like she was here in Knysna! 🇿🇦

African Wild Dogs aka Painted Dogs are one of the most endangered animals in Africa and these special canines need our protection. They are such interesting animals and lives in packs with only the alpha female breeding.

The biggest threat to their survival are humans whether because of snare poaching, road accidents, humans encroaching on their habitat or diseases from the domestic dogs of humans like Distemper or Rabies.
